SPHERICAL PLAIN BEARINGS

FINE ENGINEERING Spherical Plain Bearings
Spherical Plain Bearings
Spherical Plain Bearings (also known as Joint Bearings) are precision sliding bearings characterized by a spherical contact interface between the inner and outer rings. Unlike rolling-element bearings, they transmit loads via direct surface sliding, making them ideal for oscillating, tilting, and slow-speed rotational movements.
Their core design consists of:
Inner Ring: Features a convex spherical outer diameter.
Outer Ring: Features a concave spherical inner diameter, precisely matching the inner ring.
This unique geometry enables self-alignment, allowing the bearing to compensate for angular misalignment between the shaft and housing while simultaneously supporting heavy radial, axial, and combined loads.
Key Product Features
Exceptional Load Capacity: The large spherical contact area distributes stress evenly, enabling superior resistance to heavy static loads, dynamic loads, and severe shock loads.
Self-Aligning Ability: Can typically accommodate misalignment angles of up to 3° to 12°, effectively eliminating edge stress and reducing wear caused by installation errors or shaft deflection.
Versatile Friction Combinations:
  1. Steel-on-Steel: Requires regular lubrication; offers maximum load capacity and durability.
  2. Steel-on-PTFE Composite: Maintenance-free design; incorporates a PTFE (Teflon) or bronze composite sliding layer for low friction and long life.
Robust Durability: Manufactured from high-quality hardened bearing steel (e.g., GCr15) with surface treatments like phosphating, chrome plating, or MoS₂ coating for enhanced corrosion and wear resistance.
Compact Design: High load-carrying capability in a small envelope, ideal for space-constrained applications.
Main Types & Structures:
Radial Spherical Plain Bearings (GE Series)
Primary Function: Designed to carry heavy radial loads and moderate axial loads in one direction.
Common Designs:
  1. GE...C: Maintenance-free, PTFE composite lined.
  2. GE...ES: Steel-on-steel, lubrication grooves and holes for oil/grease service.
  3. GEG...ES: Wide inner/outer ring for increased load capacity and larger tilt angles.
Angular Contact Spherical Plain Bearings
Primary Function: Support combined radial and axial loads (axial loads in both directions).
Application: Ideal for steering mechanisms and articulated linkages.
Thrust Spherical Plain Bearings
Primary Function: Designed to accommodate heavy axial loads.
Rod Ends (Integrated Spherical Plain Bearings)
Structure: A spherical plain bearing integrated into a threaded housing (male or female thread).
Use: Perfect for connecting linkages, hydraulic cylinders, and control arms.
Typical Industrial Applications
Construction Machinery: Excavators, loaders, cranes, hydraulic cylinders.
Automotive & Transportation: Suspension systems, steering linkages, truck chassis.
Agricultural Equipment: Tractors, harvesters, tillage machinery.
Aerospace: Flight control surfaces, landing gear.
Wind Energy: Turbine yaw and pitch systems.
Robotics & Automation: Articulated robot arms.
Heavy Industry: Steel mills, mining equipment, material handling systems.
